The two countries were chosen as hosts by FIFA in May 1996; it was the first World Cup to be hosted by two countries. It was also the first World Cup held in Asia, and the last in which the golden goal rule was implemented. Brazil won the tournament for a record fifth time, beating Germany 2–0 in the final. Turkey beat Korea Republic 3–2 in the third place match.
